2018 SONIC EXPLORERS WORKSHOPS
Sonic Explorers 2018 workshops at the Rainforest Discovery Centre explore the acoustic ecology of the rainforest through art, science and new technologies. Visit our 2018 workshops page for further information, links and documentation.
WELCOME TO SONIC EXPLORERS!
SONIC EXPLORERS is a global organisation designed to engage young people in nature through sonic discoveries and technology. We support, promote and initiate creative projects that inspire environmental awareness, participation and engagement with young people across the world.
SONIC EXPLORERS focuses on facilitating workshops and expeditions revolving around acoustic ecology, field recording, ecoacoustics and sonic art. Sonic Explorers is an affiliate organisation of Ear to the Earth, a worldwide network for environmental sound art based in New York City.

WORKSHOPS & EXPEDITIONS
Join the SONIC EXPLORERS community to hear the latest information about our workshops and expeditions for 2018. We are looking forward to hosting projects across Australia, Cambodia, Mexico and the USA throughout 2018.
SONIC EXPLORERS & RIVER LISTENING
Sonic Explorers have been working with the River Listening project in Queensland, Australia. River Listening is a research collaboration between independent artist Dr. Leah Barclay and the Australian Rivers Institute to explore new methods for acoustically monitoring four Queensland river systems: the Brisbane River, the Mary River, the Noosa River and the Logan River. The project has involved the establishment of site-specific listening labs to experiment with hydrophonic recording and sound diffusion to measure aquatic biodiversity. Sonic Explorers have been running workshops and listening labs with young people across Queensland. Visit River Listening for more info.
SONIC EXPLORERS workshops in New Mexico, USA for ISEA 2012!
In September 2012, the world of art, science and technology came together in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a six day, international conference, kicking off a season-long exhibition and public programs. The ISEA2012 title “Machine Wilderness” referenced the New Mexico region as an area of rapid growth and technology within vast expanses of open land, and presents visions of a more humane interaction between technology and wilderness in which “machines” can take many forms to support life on Earth. The SONIC EXPLORERS workshops at ISEA2012 encouraged young people to experience the environment in new ways through experimental explorations in sound. Led by Leah Barclay, participants captured sounds using digital recorders and learnt about acoustic ecology. All resulting soundscapes can be heard on the Sonic Explorers sound map.
TREE SONGS transient sound installation
TREE SONGS, commissioned for TreeLine 2012, is an evocative transient sound installation featuring live performances and ephemeral soundscapes planted on portable speakers in the natural environment. The audience was guided through the installation in small groups experiencing a curated selection of outcomes from the sonic explorers workshops, a dynamic series of activities involving acoustic ecology, recording experiments and sound sculpting in the natural environment. Directed by Leah Barclay and the sonic explorers.
